In an exceptional milestone, the Mumbai Indians (MI) have established a new Indian Premier League (IPL) record by defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the 10th time at the Wankhede Stadium. It surpassed KKR's nine wins against the Punjab Kings at Eden Gardens.

Ashwani Kumar’s stellar IPL debut

The 23-year-old left-arm fast bowler Ashwani Kumar, from Jhanjeri, Punjab, was a highlight of the match. He took four wickets for 24 runs in three overs, which included KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, Manish Pandey, and Andre Russell. Ashwani Kumar is the first Indian bowler to take four wickets on his IPL debut, eclipsing a previous record lasting 16 years.

MI's bowlers were in command in this game, containing KKR to a low score of 116 runs in 16.2 overs, the lowest of the IPL 2025 season. Deepak Chahar contributed, recording figures of 2/19. 

Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav Seal the Win

In response, MI completed the task, scoring 121/2 in 12.5 overs. South African batsman Ryan Rickelton, scoring 62 runs off 41 balls, secured his first IPL half-century. Suryakumar Yadav contributed to the victory, unscored 27 off 9 balls. 

This win not only proved MI's superiority over KKR at Wankhede Stadium, but it also demonstrated the team's ability to spot and nurture young players like Ashwani Kumar. MI now appears to be a serious contender in the current IPL 2025 season because of a blend of young talent and their cunning older players.
