Glenn Maxwell Ruled Out of IPL 2025 with Finger Injury
Punjab Kings (PBKS) all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has been ruled out for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season due to a fractured finger in his right hand.
Confirmation from Team Management
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed the news at the toss ahead of their match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), calling it “very unfortunate.” While PBKS hasn’t finalized a replacement yet, Iyer expressed confidence in the squad’s depth, stating, “We’ve got a variety of players outside our playing XI who can win us games. We’ll stick to our strengths.”
Fellow Australian Marcus Stoinis shared more details before the match, revealing that Maxwell had undergone scans, which confirmed the severity of the injury. “He didn’t think it was too bad initially, but it turned out worse than expected,” said Stoinis. “It’s likely he’s out for the tournament.”
Maxwell’s Underwhelming Season
Maxwell had a below-par season with the bat, scoring just 48 runs in six innings, including four consecutive single-digit scores. However, he contributed with his offspin, picking up four wickets. He was bought for INR 4.2 crore at the previous mega auction.
Injury Woes Continue for PBKS
This is the second major injury blow for PBKS after pacer Lockie Ferguson was ruled out earlier this month with a “serious injury.” No official replacement has been named for either player yet.
Ponting: Replacements Coming Soon
PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting addressed the situation, saying the team is being cautious but plans to finalize replacements before their 12th match — the official deadline for squad changes. He emphasized the franchise’s intent to explore both international and domestic talent.
“We’ve got backups like Azmatullah Omarzai, Aaron Hardie, and Xavier Bartlett, who haven't featured yet but may come into play based on conditions,” Ponting said. He also confirmed that the team is scouting emerging Indian players, some of whom trained with PBKS recently and may travel to Dharamsala for further evaluation.
“There aren’t many high-quality overseas replacements available due to the PSL overlap,” he added. “We’re being patient, but decisions will be made soon — definitely before the 12th game.”
Points Table Update
Despite the injury setbacks, PBKS are performing well and currently sit second on the IPL 2025 points table, trailing only Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Meanwhile, CSK is the only team officially eliminated from the playoff race.
