Explained: How LSG Can Overtake Gujarat Titans to Claim the Top Spot in IPL 2025
Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are all set to face MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match number 30 of IPL 2025 at the Ekana Stadium on Monday, April 14. With four victories in six games, LSG currently sit in fourth place on the points table. Meanwhile, CSK are struggling at the bottom, having managed just one win so far this season.
While even a win might not lift CSK off the last spot, a victory for LSG could see them leap to the very top of the table. Here’s how it works:
Currently, Gujarat Titans (GT) lead the standings with 4 wins from 6 matches and 8 points, along with a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.081. They are followed closely by Delhi Capitals (DC), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and then LSG.
If LSG manage to defeat CSK—regardless of the winning margin—they will become the first team to reach 10 points this season, automatically moving to the top spot.
Although other teams may surpass them later in the tournament, a win today would allow LSG to start the week as the table-toppers.
Securing a top-two finish is crucial in the IPL, as it gives teams two opportunities to qualify for the final. The first and second-placed teams play in Qualifier 1, with the winner heading straight to the final. The loser of that game gets another shot in Qualifier 2, where they face the winner of the Eliminator (played between the 3rd and 4th placed teams).
The IPL 2025 final is scheduled for May 25, with Qualifier 1 and 2 taking place on May 20 and 23, respectively.
