BCCI in Trouble? Delhi High Court Questions 'Champak' Name for IPL Robot Dog
What’s the Issue?
The Delhi High Court has asked the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) to respond to a legal plea filed by Champak, a popular children's magazine. The magazine is upset over the use of the name ‘Champak’ for the IPL’s newly introduced AI robot dog.
Why the Complaint?
Champak magazine, published by Delhi Press since 1968, claims that using the same name for the robot is a violation of their trademark. According to their lawyer, this isn’t just a case of name overlap—it’s about commercial misuse of a name that has been popular and recognised for decades among children.
What Did the Court Say?
Justice Saurabh Banerjee, who heard the matter, pointed out that Champak has been an established brand "since eternity." He asked the BCCI to respond in writing within four weeks.
Interestingly, during the hearing, the Judge also brought up a lighter point—cricketer Virat Kohli’s nickname, ‘Chiku’, is also a character in the Champak magazine. He asked the magazine’s lawyer why they hadn’t taken action over that before.
What’s BCCI’s Defence?
BCCI's senior lawyer, J. Sai Deepak, argued that ‘Champak’ is a common flower name and that people were not confusing the robot with the magazine. He also said the robotic dog reminded people of a TV character, not a children's publication.
What’s Next?
The High Court is now waiting for BCCI’s written reply and has scheduled the next hearing for July 9, 2025.
