14-Year-Old IPL Sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi Can’t Play for India Yet—Here’s Why

A Star Is Born in IPL 2025

Vaibhav Suryavanshi, just 14 years old, has taken the cricket world by storm. Hailing from Samastipur, Bihar, this young left-handed batter is playing for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025—and making history while doing it. In only his third match, Vaibhav smashed a century in just 35 balls, grabbing headlines across the globe.

Mature Beyond His Years
At an age when most teens are busy with school, Vaibhav is fearlessly facing some of the best bowlers in the world—and excelling. His calm attitude, powerful shots, and fearless gameplay have impressed fans, cricketers, and experts alike. Many are already calling him the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Fans Want Him in Team India—But There’s a Catch
Despite all the hype, Vaibhav cannot represent India just yet. That’s because of an ICC rule introduced in 2020. According to this rule, a cricketer must be at least 15 years old to play international matches. Vaibhav will turn 15 on March 27, 2026, so as of now, he doesn't meet the age requirement.

Is There Any Way Around It?
Yes, there is. The ICC rule includes a special clause. If a player is found to be mentally, physically, and emotionally ready, and has enough playing experience, they can be granted an exception. If the BCCI supports Vaibhav’s case and the ICC agrees, he could potentially wear the India jersey earlier than expected.

Other Young Cricket Debuts in History

  • Hasan Raza from Pakistan holds the record for the youngest international debut—14 years and 227 days.

  • In India, Sachin Tendulkar debuted at the age of 16 years and 205 days.

So while Vaibhav can’t play for India just yet, he wouldn’t be the first teenager to make it big internationally.

Will He Go to England This June?
Team India is set to tour England starting June 21, and there’s buzz that a 17-year-old is being considered for the squad. This has sparked rumours about Vaibhav also being fast-tracked, especially if the ICC grants a green signal.

Final Thoughts
Vaibhav Suryavanshi may be too young by the rulebook, but his talent is way ahead of his age. Whether or not the ICC allows him to debut early, one thing is clear—India has found a future star.
